The feature debut of director Justin Hughes, the thriller Streamer will see a content creator menaced by an online troll.
We’ve seen all kinds of films that have attempted to mine tense stories from the weird online realm we all regularly inhabit. The director of Ring explored how online friendships can become manipulative and toxic in 2010’s Chatroom. Films like Cam and Cam-Girl have set psychological horror stories in the online sex industry.
Streamer is, as far as we can tell, the first thriller set in the world of videogame content creators. It’s the feature debut of writer-director Justin Hughes, and will tell the story of a chap named Teddy, whose work as an internet streamer is thrown into chaos by an online troll.
The cast, according to Variety, will include Freddy Piazza, who’ll play the lead; Rachel Alig, Francesca Rowe and KC Wolfe.
If you prefer the official logline, here it is:
“The story follows Teddy (Piazza), a popular yet divisive internet streamer who gets drawn into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse against a mysterious troll with a vendetta against him.”
Could it be an updating of 90s thrillers like The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, but for the age of Twitch? We certainly hope so.
It’ll be intriguing to see how accurately the movie can reflect the world of videogame live-streaming. Twitch is by far the biggest platform in that arena, with millions visiting it every month; the most viewed games on there are things like League Of Legends, Grand Theft Auto V and Counter-Strike.
Unless Streamer has a sizeable budget for licencing deals, however, its makers will probably have to come up with a fictional platform and games: Teddy live-streaming a game of Legendary League on Flinch – that kind of thing.
Streamer is set to begin filming in Los Angeles over the next few weeks.
